For those of you who are new to Powder Springs, or for those who are visiting our city or our site, here is a brief history as it is usually explained by the city, as to how we got our name:

Powder Springs was incorporated in 1838, and at that time was called, "Springville".  Cherokee Indians populated this area at that time, and were forced out to make way for the new settlers.  In 1859, the city's name was changed to "Powder Springs", coming from several actual springs that were in the area at that time.  In-between this time, the city was briefly called "Gunpowder Springs", because the numerous minerals found in the spring water gave it a black, gunpowder, look.  I would assume then, that the "Gun" was dropped to form "Powder Springs", perhaps to give it a less "gun slinger" or rough name, maybe?  Early P.R. work perhaps?  Either way, you're now in "Powder Springs", Georgia.

Until recently, Power Springs remained the typical sleepy, southern town, staying pretty much out of the shadow of nearby Atlanta, due to the fact it simply wasn't right on one of the interstate roads.  That eventually had to change however, as Atlanta saturated it's suburbs to the brink, leaving very few "country" places left in the metro Atlanta area.  Now, Powder Springs is experiencing explosive growth, giving it at one time recently, the distinction of being one of the top five fastest growing cities in Georgia ( per capita ).  I've heard current city population figures vary from 10,000 to 12,000 residents in the city limits of Powder Springs.  However, it's estimated that there are 75,000 to 80,000 people within five miles of all directions of the city center, and growing very rapidly as people drive their BMWs and SUVs westward, to get "out" of the city.

Just click on "Need A Map" above, to go to a Yahoo map of Powder Springs.  Please keep in mind, these maps are not updated thoroughly!  The new Richard Sailor's Parkway (also called Powder Springs Parkway) is not shown on this map, as an example.  It should be used for general directions only.  Click on your browser's "Back" button to come back here.  Don't get lost!

Also... search engine Google is testing a map feature now.  It's still in test stages, but the maps look really neat.  Click  HERE  to see Powder Springs via that service.

Places To Stay        v

Powder Springs does not have any actual motels or hotels within the town limits, however, there are two decent places in Hiram, Georgia, which is about a 5 to 8 minute drive West of town.  They are:

Country Inn & Suites:   Updated:   Place has frankly gone down a lot.  We got two rooms there recently and they were NOT clean.  Have heard similar comments by folks, so we suggest the next choice...

Holiday Inn Express:   Only a 1/2 mile from the Country Inn.  If you're a business traveler who just wants to get in and out of a place, then this will be fine.  Rooms and "mini suites" average around $66.00 per night here.  Next to a Ryan's Restaurant and shopping center.  Click their name to go to a (small) page about them, or call them directly at:  (770) 222 - 9494

Area Attractions        v

While Powder Springs is not exactly a vacation destination for many folks, and there isn't an amusement park or major attraction in the town limits, we are blessed to have several great parks and walking trails in our area - more than many towns of this size as a matter of fact.  For nature lovers, this is a great reason to live here alone.  Read on for more...

Photos are by "Greg"... just click them for a larger version.

"Downtown" Power Springs?"
MAINSTREET2.JPG (18828 bytes)     TOWNSQUARE.JPG (17794 bytes)
Well yes, we do have one.  Since the construction of the new Publix shopping center however, many people simply use that as the "town square".  Years ago, the city tried to actually create a town square, which can be found off of the main street through town ( Marietta Street ).  This is where City Hall and the police station are located.  However, it's little more than a square shopping center with dentists, and other miscellaneous businesses, and a really tiny little fountain in the center.  Enough said.  It would be nice to see City Hall completely redesign if anything just the look of downtown Powder Springs (maybe solicit builders to build town home communities with sidewalks that branch out from downtown, creating a village atmosphere over time.  Not that we expect this, but it would be nice (hint).  Some improvements however, ARE to begin soon on the downtown area such as sidewalk enhancements, etc., so be prepared for traffic to be stopped once this begins.

Play softball?  Looking for the local park?
horsepondSM.jpg (146258 bytes)
Wild Horse Creek park   is located behind the "Tap Middle School", off of Macedonia Road here in Powder Springs.  You can find soccer fields, softball fields, a couple of tennis courts, a small fishing lake, equestrian area,  and mountain bike run.  It would be NICE if the County would construct a "dog run", too.  These are popular in other areas, and they are basically just a fenced off area similar to a large ball field, where people can take their dogs to run freely and play with one another.  Hint hint, Cobb leaders.  A lot of pet owners in this town, ya know.  Ducks and geese hang out here for those who want to grab a loaf of bread and feed them.

The Wild Horse Trail
Walkers Enjoying The Trail.jpg (60533 bytes)
This trail ( see photo gallery link below as well ) connects the Wild Horse Park to the Silver Comet Trail ( below ).  I really love this trail, as you really get the feel that you're way out in the country while walking on it, and it's not overly crowded.  While the Silver Comet Trail is nice, it feels like you're walking on a paved street, while on this one, you feel like you're walking in a forest with a sidewalk running through it.   After a little over a mile, you'll come across a two level deck that was built for observing uh.. trees.  After that, you connect to the Silver Comet Trail.  Here's the hitch, the trail does not actually begin *in* Wild Horse Park.  When driving east on Macedonia Road, you'll pass Tapp Middle School.  You will come to the entrance to the park, but keep going over the hill.  The next parking lot you come to on the left, is where you can park for this trail.  Park, and cross the street at the crosswalk located here, over to "Lancer Drive" where you'll find the entrance to the trail about 50 or so feet down that street.  Just look for the large metal vine trellis.  That's the entrance.  Now, the Powder Springs police are supposed to patrol this path on bikes, but I'll have to admit, I've not yet seen one since opening ceremonies on any of my hikes.  So, use caution as you would anywhere if walking alone, and don't walk at night.  There are usually enough folks around to discourage any nutburgers, but still, anywhere you go you should think safety first.  There are two solar powered police call boxes along the route for anything you may need them for.  No, running out of water is not an emergency.  Non-powered bikes, skating, and walking yourself and/or your dog are allowed on this trail.  Horses are a no no.  See the photo gallery link (below) for some more pics of the trail.

Jogging, Biking, Dog Walking?
COMETTRAIL.JPG (35635 bytes)
The "Silver Comet Trail" is mentioned briefly above, so here's the scoop:  Approximately 12 or so miles of a new trail now runs throughout South Cobb County.  This trail follows an old CSX Railroad corridor, and is still under construction in other areas, though the area through Powder Springs is pretty much complete.  It's a paved trail with grassy areas on the side, and you're allowed to walk, job, skate, bike, and walk your pets on the trail.  Don't forget the pooper-scooper or baggie to clean up after Fido and Spot, and remember the leash law!  Eventually, this trail is going to connect to varied other trails that will eventually go from Atlanta to Birmingham, Alabama.  The trail is technically closed at night, and patrolled with bicycle cops for safety.  Still, use common sense if using it during dusk or off-peak hours when alone.  There is a good sized parking lot for the trail across from the Publix and Ace Hardware area, on the other side of Richard Sailor's Parkway.  This is becoming a very popular trail, and at times, can be busy even in this less populated Powder Springs area of it.  Therefore, if walking kids or pets, make sure and keep an eye out over your shoulder for people coming up on you in fast moving bikes.  More info on the trail can be had by calling the Cobb County D.O.T. at:  ( 770 ) 528 - 1679.

Sweetwater Creek State Park.
mirrorlakeSM.jpg (52344 bytes)
Located just a few miles south of Powder Springs, off of Thornton Road, south of I-20.  A local state park with miles of hiking and jogging trails that run along a creek with babbling water ( very relaxing as you walk ), and even some old ruins from the civil war era to look at.  The park also features a large lake for boating and fishing, and picnic areas.  There is a link on my "Links & Misc" page for Georgia state parks, and you can find Sweetwater Park's page by visiting that site for more info.  This is a great place to walk dogs ( on a leash of course ) as well, however, pay heed... I've encountered people there who for some reason walk very aggressive and sometimes just plain mean dogs there, so, keep your own pets at a good distance when walking past others on the trail - and for the 105 pound women out there who are trying to walk 150 pound Rottweilers... get some brains, please, before someone gets hurt.  Duh.   See the photo gallery link (below) for some pics of this park.

Veteran's Memorial  ( 4180 Atlanta Street at the George E. Ford Center )

memorialXSM.jpg (53244 bytes)
The Veteran's Memorial is a very nice memorial for honoring those who have given their lives both figuratively and literally, to our country.  You'll find dedication plaques, dedication benches, a fountain, flags representing the armed forces, local and state, and legions, and engraved dedication bricks on the memorial itself.  Make note, that bricks representing those in the armed forces are on the front of the memorial, and bricks representing local clubs, organizations, or individuals, are on the back.  Pay your respects to our veterans, and pay the memorial a visit.

v Weather v

Ok people, Winter is here.  When it gets cold - bring the dogs INSIDE!   Spring is around the corner, so do the same when bad storms hit.  With Powder Springs new animal cruelty laws (see the news section), you might just get in trouble for not doing so!
